In the early 1950′s, a small group of devoted people already part of the United Church community in Vancouver recognized the need for a local place of worship for the families moving into the newly developing residential area bordered by Oak and Granville Streets, between 49th and 57th Avenues. After lengthy trials, and deliberations, a worship service was held on the 6th of June 1958 officially constituting St. Stephen’s as a congregation within the United Church of Canada.
For some six years worship took place in a variety of settings, until the present site (purchased in 1960) was developed with the current sanctuary. Several additions later, the church is still blessed with a welcoming and warm environment for worship and fellowship.
Just because St. Stephen’s is a “neighbourhood” church, it doesn’t mean you have to live close by! The St. Stephen’s community gathers from far and wide to worship together and be part of a Christ centred community.
